Properties: Flammable, mobile liq. Odor of chloroform. d2525 1.159; bp 95-96°. Solidifies below -70°. nD20 1.4388. Flash point (ASTM open cup) 21°C (70°F). Despite the low flash pt it does not catch fire readily in industrial applications. Fire pt 38°. Slightly sol in water; miscible with organic solvents. LD50 orally in rats: 1.19 ml/kg (Smyth).

Use: Solvent for oils, fats, resins, waxes, rubber; in ion exchange manuf; in photographic film prodn; paper coating; petroleum catalyst regeneration. Has been used as a soil fumigant.
