Literature References: Contains about 8% aluminum diacetate, Al(OH)(CH3CO2)2. Prepd from aluminum sulfate, acetic acid, calcium carbonate and water. Details of prepn: USP XVIII, pp 29-30. Several other routes of prepn, see Aluminum Diacetate.
Properties: Clear, colorless liquid. Odor of acetic acid. d 1.045. Acid to litmus. Gradually becomes turbid and colloidal. Sometimes a more basic salt precipitates out and settles to the bottom of the container. Heat promotes the decomposition. Keep in a cool place and discard when cloudy.
Density: d 1.045
CAUTION: Ingestion of large doses may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, melena, hematemesis.
Use: As mordant in cotton dyeing, in printing fabrics, in water- and fireproofing fabrics, in waterproofing tissues, in formulations for antiperspirants and embalming fluids. See also Aluminum Diacetate.
