Properties: Dark gray tetragonal crystals, lustrous or dull powder; faint phosphorus odor. d 4.55. When strongly heated with the exclusion of air it melts and finally sublimes. The mp has been given as 420° and the bp as 1100°. When kept dry it is quite stable. Insol in water, alcohol. Sol in benzene, carbon disulfide; reacts with HCl, H2SO4 with evolution of spontaneously flammable phosphine. Reacts violently with concd H2SO4, HNO3 and other oxidizing agents. Keep dry. LD50 in male, female rats (mg/kg): 12.00, 15.72 orally (Ming).
