Literature References: Prepd by passing fluorine slowly through an aq NaOH soln: Yost, Inorg. Synth. 1, 109 (1939); Schnizlein et al., J. Phys. Chem. 56, 233 (1952). Toxicity data: Darmer et al., Am. Ind. Hyg. Assoc. J. 33, 661 (1972). Review: Kemmitt, Sharp, Adv. Fluorine Chem. 4, 213-314 (1965).
Properties: Colorless gas. Yellowish-brown when liq. Peculiar smell. Does not attack glass in the cold. Corrodes mercury. Reacts very slowly with water. The gas may be kept over water unchanged for a month. d (liq; -224°) 1.90. mp -223.8°. bp -145.3°. Trouton constant 20.65. Soly in water (0°) 6.8 ml gas/100 ml H2O. LC50 (1 hr) inhalation by rats, mice: 2.6, 1.5 ppm (Darmer).
Melting point: mp -223.8°
Boiling point: bp -145.3°
Density: d (liq; -224°) 1.90
Toxicity data: LC50 (1 hr) inhalation by rats, mice: 2.6, 1.5 ppm (Darmer)
CAUTION: Potential symptoms of overexposure are headache; eyes, skin, respiratory system irritation, pulmonary edema; direct contact with gas under pressure may cause eye and skin burns. See NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (DHHS/NIOSH 97-140, 1997) p 238.
