Properties: White, odorless, deliquesc granules; saline taste. When strongly heated, it dec with evolution of phosphine which ignites spontaneously in the air. It explodes when triturated with chlorates or other oxidizing agents. Sol in 1 part water, 0.15 part boiling water; freely sol in glycerol and in boiling alcohol; sol in cold alcohol, slightly in abs alcohol. Insol in ether. Soly of anhydr NaH2PO2 at 25° in ethylene glycol: 33.0 g/100 g; in propylene glycol: 9.7 g/100 g. The aq soln is neutral. Keep well closed.
 
Use: As reagent for arsenic and iodates; prepn of hypophosphites syrup.
