Literature References: Prepd by direct fluorination of rhenium metal: Ruff, Kwasnik, Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 209, 113 (1932); 219, 65 (1934); Malm, Selig, J. Inorg. Nucl. Chem. 20, 189 (1961). The product obtained by Ruff was probably a mixture of ReF6 and ReF7: eidem, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 82, 1510 (1960).
Properties: Yellow, cubic crystals or liquid; colorless gas; extremely hygroscopic. Forms bluish vapors on contact with air, discolors to a dark purple liquid. mp 18.5°. bp 33.7°. Sol in nitric acid. Soly in anhydr HF: 1.75 moles/1000 g HF, Frlec, Hyman, Inorg. Chem. 6, 1596 (1967). Does not attack dried Pyrex glass or silica. May be handled in copper up to 150°.
