Ethyl Iodide
Title: Ethyl Iodide
CAS Registry Number: 75-03-6
CAS Name: Iodoethane
Molecular Formula: C2H5I
Molecular Weight: 155.97
Percent Composition: C 15.40%, H 3.23%, I 81.36%
Line Formula: CH3CH2I
Literature References: Made by the action of iodine on alcohol in the presence of red phosphorus. Ethyl iodide contains about 98% CH3CH2I and about 2% alcohol.
Properties: Heavy, clear, very refractive liquid; ethereal odor. When freshly prepared it is colorless, but soon becomes red (on exposure to light and air) due to liberation of iodine. Silver leaf prevents or greatly retards decompn. d2020 1.950. bp 72°. mp -108°. nD15 1.5168. Sol in 250 parts water with gradual decompn; miscible with alcohol and most organic solvents. Keep dry and cool, tightly closed, protected from light.
Melting point: mp -108°
Boiling point: bp 72°
Index of refraction: nD15 1.5168
Density: d2020 1.950
