Properties: Needles from methanol, mp 226-228°. [a]D20 -21.3° (c = 1.21 in 5% HCl); [a]D -33° (aq 1% HCl). uv max (ethanol): 219, 280 nm (log e 4.26, 4.30). Freely sol in dil HCl; dissolves slowly in 2N NaOH or saturated NaHCO3; practically insol in water; sol in hot alc, in amyl alcohol, slightly in benzene, chloroform, ether.
Melting point: mp 226-228°
Optical Rotation: [a]D20 -21.3° (c = 1.21 in 5% HCl); [a]D -33° (aq 1% HCl)
