The mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-dinitrochlorobenzenes (of which the 2,4-compd is present in largest amount) can be separated with an alkaline ethanol-water soln: Molard, Vaganay, Mem. Properties: Yellow crystals. Skin irritant. d ~1.7. mp 52-54°. bp 315°. Practically insol in water. Sparingly sol in cold, freely sol in hot alc; sol in ether, benzene, CS2. LD50 orally in rats: 1.07 g/kg (Smyth).

CAUTION: May cause dermatitis of both primary and allergic types.
