Derivative Type: Octahydrate
Properties: Tetragonal crystals from water. Crystals contain tetramers of the form [Zr4(OH)8(H2O)16]8+; d 1.91: Mak, Can. J. Chem. 46, 3491 (1968). Freely sol in water, alcohol. The pH is about equal to that of HCl of the same molarity. LD50 in rats: 400 mg/kg i.p.; 3.5 g/kg orally (Cochran).
Density: d 1.91: Mak, Can. J. Chem. 46, 3491 (1968)
Toxicity data: LD50 in rats: 400 mg/kg i.p.; 3.5 g/kg orally (Cochran)

Use: To make other zirconium compds; to precipitate acid dyes; to prepare high quality pigment toners; to improve the properties of color lakes. Aq ZrOCl2 solns have considerable solvent action on sparingly sol sulfates, such as calcium sulfate. The free acid in ZrOCl2 solns may be neutralized, and a sol compd ZrOOHCl.xH2O can be recovered. It is highly polymerized in soln and amorphous in the solid state; has been used in the prepn of body deodorants and antiperspirant preparations.
