Properties: Colorless liquid; penetrating acid odor. Absorbs moisture from the air and evolves dense white fumes. Reacts with water to produce titanium dioxide and hydrochloric acid. d 1.726. mp -24.1°. bp 136.4°. Vapor pressure (20°): 10.0 mm; (22°) 9.6 mm. Sol in cold water, alcohol; dec by hot water. Corrosive. Keep tightly closed.
Melting point: mp -24.1°
Boiling point: bp 136.4°
Density: d 1.726
CAUTION: Potential symptoms of overexposure by inhalation are coughing, tightness in chest, chemical bronchitis or pneumonia, congestion of mucous membranes of upper resp tract. Direct contact may cause irritation or burns of eyes, skin, mucous membranes and lungs (PB98-101082).
Use: Manuf titanium compounds, iridescent glass and artificial pearls. Formerly used with potassium bitartrate as a mordant in textile industry, and with dyewoods in dyeing leather; also as smoke-producing screen with ammonia.
