Properties: Monoclinic prisms from water or by sublimation. mp 238°. Has slightly acidic properties, Ka = 5 ´ 10-9. Absorption spectrum: Hartley, Hedley, J. Chem. Soc. 91, 317 (1907). Slightly soluble in water. A satd aq soln contains 0.036 g at 25°; 0.07 g at 40°; about 0.4 g at the bp. 100 g of boiling alcohol dissolves 5 g phthalimide. Almost insol in benzene, petr ether; fairly sol in boiling acetic acid; freely sol in aq alkali hydroxides.
