Old Yellow Enzyme
Title: Old Yellow Enzyme
CAS Registry Number: 9001-68-7
CAS Name: Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate dehydrogenase
Additional Names: dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase; NADPH2 diaphorase; OYE
Literature References: Mol wt 102,000-106,000. Flavoprotein which catalyzes the oxidation of reduced triphosphopyridine nucleotide by oxygen or ferricytochrome c. When the oxidizing agent is molecular oxygen, OYE functions as a true hydrogen carrier, whereas when ferricytochrome c is the oxidizing agent, only electrons are passed on to the cytochrome, the protons being liberated as free hydrogen ions. Shows diaphorase activity as well as low cytochrome c reductase activity. Isoln from dried brewer's bottom yeast: Warburg, Christian, Biochem. Z. 266, 377 (1933); Theorell, Akeson, Biochem. Prep. 6, 54 (1958). Each molecule contains two flavin mononucleotide groups: Ehrenberg, Acta Chem. Scand. 11, 1257 (1957). Review: Akeson et al., The Enzymes vol. 7, P. D. Boyer et al., Eds. (Academic Press, New York, 1963) pp 477-494.
