Maximum concn of electrolyte soln in which 1% of the wetting agent is sol: 3% NaCl; 2-4% NH4Cl (turbid); 3-6% (NH4)2HPO4 (turbid); 4% NaNO3 (slightly turbid); 15% Na2SO4 (very slightly turbid). Also sol in pine oil, oleic acid, acetone, hot kerosene, carbon tetrachloride, glycerol, hot olive oil; insol in liq petrolatum. Surface tension in water: 0.001% = 69.4 dyn/cm; 0.02% = 68.3 dyn/cm; 0.1% = 50.2 dyn/cm; 0.25% = 41.6 dyn/cm; 1% = 29.2 dyn/cm. Interfacial tension 1% in water vs. liquid petrolatum: 5 seconds = 7.55 dyn/cm; 30 seconds = 7.37 dyn/cm; 15 minutes = 7.03 dyn/cm. Interfacial tension 0.1% in water vs. liquid petrolatum: 5 seconds = 29.5 dyn/cm; 30 seconds = 28.6 dyn/cm; 15 minutes = 27.5 dyn/cm. Stable in acid and neutral solns, hydrolyzes in alkaline solns.
