Properties: Rosy-red tetragonal crystals. mp 1100-1200°, forming a red liq. Volatilizes at about 1400°. d 4.43. Sparingly sol in water; readily sol in warm mineral acids. Forms di-, tri-, and tetrahydrates, all sol in water; their aq solns are dec by boiling, forming the oxyfluoride CoF2.CoO.H2O.

Use: Catalyst for organic reactions.
