Properties: Greenish-black powder. With water it yields a reddish-purple soln, which appears blue on extreme diln. The alcoholic soln is blue in all concns. Approximate soly in water 2.0%, abs ethanol 1.5%, Cellosolve 2.25%, ethylene glycol 6.5%, xylene 0.005%.
Use: To dye fabrics a navy-blue color with faint reddish tinge. As nuclear and connective tissue stain. One of the ingredients of Picro-Mallory stain: Lendrum, McFarlane, J. Pathol. Bacteriol. 50, 381 (1940).
