A single peptide chain composed of 60 amino acid residues cross-linked by four disulfide bridges with leucine and asparagine at the N and C terminals respectively: Narita, Lee, Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 41, 339 (1970). Causes irreversible depolarization of cell membrane and contraction of skeletal and smooth muscle. Shows direct lytic and marked cardiotoxic activities, potentiated by phospholipase A and prevented by polyanions (heparin, RNA, gangliosides). Pharmacology: Lee et al., Arch. Exp. Pathol.
