Prepd by anodic oxidation of a satd (NH4)2SO4 soln: Feher in Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry Vol. 1, G. Brauer, Ed. (Academic Press, New York, 2nd ed., 1963) p 390. Toxicity study: Smyth et al., Am. Ind. Hyg. Assoc. J. 30, 470 (1969).
Properties: Odorless platelike or prismatic (monoclinic) crystals, or white granular powder. Stable for months when pure and dry; dec in presence of moisture, gradually evolving ozone-contg oxygen; dec on heating, evolving O2 and forming (NH4)2S2O7. d 1.98. Strong oxidizing agent. Freely sol in water; aq soln is acid and dec slowly at room temp and rapidly at higher temp evolving O2 and forming NH4HSO4. Keep dry, in a cool place and protected from organic matter. LD50 orally in rats: 820 mg/kg (Smyth).
Density: d 1.98
Toxicity data: LD50 orally in rats: 820 mg/kg (Smyth)
Use: As oxidizer and bleacher; to remove hypo; reducer and retarder in photography; in dyeing, manuf aniline dyes; oxidizer for copper; etching zinc; decolorizing and deodorizing oils; electroplating; washing infected yeast; removing pyrogallol stains; making soluble starch; depolarizer in electric batteries; in anal. chemistry chiefly for detection and determination of manganese.
