Properties: Needles from boiling water, mp 134.5°. When dissolved, exists as the 1-hydroxymethylene tautomer. [a]D22 +65° (c = 0.95 in CHCl3); [a]D22 +61° (c = 0.96 in methanol). uv max (dioxane): 290, 232 nm (log e 3.74, 4.52). Sol in acetone, dioxane; less sol in chloroform, ethanol, benzene; slightly sol in carbon tetrachloride, water.

Optical Rotation: [a]D22 +65° (c = 0.95 in CHCl3); [a]D22 +61° (c = 0.96 in methanol)
