Boleko Oil
Title: Boleko Oil
Additional Names: Isano oil
Literature References: Oil extracted from the nuts of the tree Ongokea gore (Hua) Pierre, Olacaceae, growing in equatorial Africa. Contains fatty acids (as glycerides): isanic acid 46%, isanolic acid 44%. Refs: Scher, Arch. Pharm. 287, 548 (1954); Dupont et al., Bull. Soc. Chim. Fr. 1957, 1495; De Vries, Oleagineux 12, 427 (1957); Kneeland et al., J. Am. Oil Chem. Soc. 35, 361 (1958). Extraction procedure: Lambert, US 2800492 (1957 to UCB). Structure of acids: Gunstone, Sealy, J. Chem. Soc. 1963, 5772; Morris, ibid. 5779.
Properties: Typical characteristics: Acid no. 1-10; ester no. 183.5; sapon no. 185-200; iodine no. 254-259; d420 0.973-0.983; nD20 1.505-1.509; viscosity (25°): 7-10 P. Soluble in acetone, benzene, ethyl ether, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform. Slightly sol in petr ether, ethanol, hexane. The viscosity increases upon heating and the oil is transformed into a rubber-like mass. Does not polymerize when heated to a moderate temp; when heated rapidly to temp above 200° polymerization becomes so rapid as to become explosive. Polymerization is explained by the acetylenic structure of isanic acid.
Index of refraction: nD20 1.505-1.509
Density: d420 0.973-0.983
Use: In fire retardant paints.
